Prof. Coenie Koegelenberg is a clinician-researcher and Head of the Division of Pulmonology in the Department of Medicine at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa. He has more than 20 years of consultant-level experience in Pulmonology and Critical Care. His research interests include lung cancer, infectious and pleural diseases, applied transthoracic ultrasound, interventional pulmonology, and critical care, as well as more recently COVID-19. He is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and 19 textbook chapters, predominantly in the fields of transthoracic ultrasound, interventional pulmonology, pleural disease, and respiratory infections. Prof. Koegelenberg has been extensively involved in the development of national guidelines for the management of common respiratory diseases in South Africa, including the most recent South African Thoracic Society consensus statement on transbronchial lung cryobiopsy for interstitial lung disease. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international congresses across the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, and Africa. He is a past President of the South African Thoracic Society and a founding member and current Chair of Interventional Pulmonology South Africa (IPSA), an assembly within SATS dedicated to advancing the quality of interventional pulmonology and training pulmonologists in advanced procedural techniques in South Africa.
