PMRSA
ASSEMBLY ON PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN THORACIC SOCIETY
Our history
August 2023 saw the launch of the Assembly on Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the South African Thoracic Society or PMRSA in short. The PMRSA functions as an autonomous assembly within SATS. The SATS council agreed to recognise the autonomy of PMRSA with regards to the election of an executive council, financial administration (including the administration of grants and sponsorships from industry) and educational programs (including symposia and training courses). PMRSA is subjected to an annual independent financial audit as part of the SATS audit. All PMRSA members remain active SATS members (both entities will charge separate membership fees). PMRSA is also allowed one ex-officio member on the SATS council.
The first general meeting will be held in 2025 (Stellenbosch University Medical School / virtual). The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss, amend and accept a proposed constitution and to elect an executive committee.
We believe that this assembly will ultimately improve the quality of cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation in the South African population presenting with acute and chronic cardio-pulmonary insufficiency.
The primary objectives of this assembly are to:
- Advance and advocate for the holistic management of people with acute and chronic cardio-pulmonary disease in interprofessional teams.
- Promote a high standard in clinical practice, education and research in the field of cardio-pulmonary health and holistic rehabilitation in all patient groups.
- Exchange knowledge and experiences with related national and international societies and interdisciplinary teams.
- Organise/ support/accredit regular courses, symposia and workshops.
